Product Review – The Tamiya 70189 – 4 Speed Gearbox
If you are a machine design hobbyist who enjoys tinkering with toys and gadgets, at some point you are going to want a neat little versatile powerplant to add movement to your inventions. Tamiya has a great range of these products, and we are going to look at one of them today. The Tamiya 70189 – 4 Speed Gearbox.
It’s a really neat and compact little machine that arrives in kit form. You get to assemble it yourself. One awesome feature is that you can get various speeds out of it, depending on how you arrange the gears inside of it.
I have modeled this little gearbox out and uploaded the files to GrabCAD. The models are downloadable from GrabCAD so that you can insert the device into the mechanical assemblies of your projects. To download from GrabCAD, you need to sign up as a GrabCAD member. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s well worth it.
Assembly of the gearbox is easy and intuitive. The instructions explain clearly how to set the different gear configurations to achieve different output ratios. The output ratios are as follows:
- 71.4:1 = 88 rpm
- 149.9:1 = 42 rpm
- 314.9:1 = 20 rpm
- 661.2:1 = 9 rpm
Where have I used this model?
Where can I get one?
Overall a great machine and well worth the money spent. If you want to add one into your designs, download it from the GrabCAD site and click on GrabCAD’s like button.
